Biography
Steve’s interest in photography began while he was a schoolboy . He started photographing wildlife in his garden and quickly progressed to his first commissioned work (family portraits and Stage actors)
He soon developed a love of all photography and became a great admirer of David Bailey, Norman Parkinson, Eric Hosking, Helmut Newton and Cecil Beaton.
Early Career
After leaving school Steve began working as an assistant for a variety of photographers. During this time he gained a depth of knowledge in a variety of areas, particularly in portraiture including the art of ‘working the subject’. His career then took a major turn in 1979 when he moved to London to work for Victor Watts, the great magazine photographer.
Celebrities'
Steve gained a name for himself as a photographer in the celebrity world, particularly for major magazines. Initially he assisted major photographers including Stefano Massimo, Ian McKell and Gered Mankowitz (famed for his iconic portraits of Jimi Hendrix). However, it was not long before Steve had gained enough stature in this specialist area to ‘go it alone’.
He worked in England and the USA, for such influential publications as The Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday, Esquire, The Face, GQ and The Sunday Express magazine. His creativity, humour and ‘theatrical’ approach enabled him to create unique portraits of many major stars: Ronnie Wood, Grace Jones, Sade, Julie Andrews, Anthony Hopkins, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Bronson, Jools Holland, Kenny Everett, Ringo Starr, Dudley Moore, Sir Ian McKellen and Glenda Jackson to name but a few. Five of his portraits are held permanently by The National Portrait Gallery in London ( Barry McGuigan, Ronnie & Jo Wood, Larry Adler, Alun Armstrong and Naturalist Percy Edwards).
It’s Not All About Famous People…
As Steve became better known for his work, he was able to expand into other areas that interested him. This included still life imagery where he could employ his knowledge of lighting etc learned from his portrait work to create captivating images. His skills enabled him to create unusual, striking pictures that showed hidden depths to otherwise ‘typical’ scenes.
Steve has recently completed a full photographic documentation of the final working year at Wandsworth’s Ram Brewery. The images perfectly reflect the warmth, humour and poignancy of an era, industry and community that is now over.
