Buster the Dray horse Photographed August 2005

These horses weighed over a ton and I was always very wary of photographing them, especially when surrounded by lights and photographic gear. Thankfully because of their experience at countless fetes and agriculture shows plus the annual appearance at the Lord Mayors show, they were always immaculately behaved though I did hear a story of a woman coming out of a pub a little worse for wear who decided for some reason to give the dray horse a whack and ended up on her backside on the pavement!

This is a shot of underneath the Young’s show dray which was used for display at agricultural & horse shows rather than for everyday working and was always kept in tip top condition by the draymen - Henry, ‘little Joe’, ‘Big Joe’ , Stuart and Garry.

These were used to feed the heavy horses when they’re on the go delivering beer to the local pubs in and around Wandsworth including The old Sergeant, The Kings Arms and The Crane. These bags were hanging up in the old stables and were still in use when this picture was taken.

This is a detail shot of Joe Azzopardi (‘Little’ Joe) grooming Buster in the exercise yard of The Ram Brewery in Wandsworth London.

It was well known that the chairman John Young was one of the people responsible for saving the heavy horse breed in this country and as a result these animals were really well looked after. Buster was the largest of the dray horses at the time and not an animal to be messed with! In those days the stables were open to the public on Sunday mornings so that families could get up close to the animals.

This beautiful old cabinet is where all the countless awards and rosettes were housed that Kevin Flynn’s heavy horse team (and their predecessors) won at various shows around the country and Europe on behalf of the Ram brewery.
